About the Hub
The African Hub on AI Safety, Peace and Security promotes safe and responsible AI use across Africa through collaborative research, policy development, and capacity building. We work with universities, governments, civil society, and communities to address AI-related risks that disproportionately affect marginalized groups, particularly women and girls facing AI-generated harms like synthetic content and disinformation.
Our mission is to build African leadership in global AI governance by developing context-sensitive safety frameworks, strengthening institutional capacity to detect and mitigate harms, and ensuring African perspectives shape international AI policy debates rather than simply responding to external frameworks.
This project is led by the UCT AI Initiative with the Global Center on AI Governance. It is funded by the International Development Research Centre of Canada and the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office of the UK under the AI4Development Africa programme.
